My Best Friend is a Superhero!

“Give me your lunch money!” exclaimed James. The kid he was bullying looked clueless. “You heard me!” yelled James. My friend, Karen, left my side and ran straight to James. She was going to stand up to him! “Put him down!’’ She yelled. “I am NOT kidding around!” James just snickered at her. Karen looked at him with a very serious face. he put the kid down and into the schoolhouse She ran back to me. “That felt really good!” Karen had won. I knew she would.
The next day at school, Karen had continued to confront bullies and their actions. She cherished the warm feeling she got inside when she helped someone out. She saw Mary Lowe pick on Miranda Pratt about her hair. Of course, she walked over to Mary and made her feel like a really bad person. Actually, she felt made her feel so bad that Mary tried to hug Miranda. As Karen’s best friend, her sensitivity came in handy for me. If somebody picked on me in any way, I knew that my best friend would be right there by my side. It was the greatest feeling to have in the whole world.
Then came math class. I purposely had Karen sit next to me, so if anything happened, she’d be right there. On the other side of me was James. “Would Cathy please pass out the math test?” asked Ms. Hart. I stood up. I passed out the test, as I was told to. I was left with one extra paper. “I didn’t get one.’’ whined James. I rolled my eyes and walked over to his desk. Apparently, James couldn’t properly close a water bottle, so when I put the paper on his desk, my elbow knocked over the water bottle, spilling the water on to his copy of the test. Nobody saw, but of course Karen had to tell Ms. Hart. It wasn’t like I meant to do it! He stood up. I took a step back. He was really tall. “ Hey punk! ” said James. “ For the next few days, I eat your lunch, and you do my homework.” “That doesn’t sound very fair.” I said anxiously. It was just my luck that Karen was in the girl’s room, and Ms. Hart was too terrified to move! “Detention, you two!” She finally said. “But…” Ms. Hart cut me off. “Not buts!” I hung my head. I had to spend four hours in a locked room with James Murphy! I wanted to dash out the door. It was not the kind of situation I ever wanted to be in. Thanks a lot, Karen!
On Saturday, my dad dropped me off in front of the school at 11:00. “Have a nice afternoon.” He muttered. I could tell that he was mad at me. I grabbed my backpack and dragged myself to the door. I walked down the long hallway. Finally, I came to the english room. It felt like it had taken one hundred years! Nervously, I stepped inside. Everyone there had big denim jackets, pimples, and nose rings. The teacher was trembling under the desk. I knew I was in the right place. The big chalkboard said “DETENTION” with a line under it. I took my seat, grabbed my bag, and started my homework. I was just about to do 4586 divided by 7, When the teacher called me to his desk“ Would Cathy please see me for a moment?” asked the teacher. My head shot up I slowly got up and walked to his desk. “I have gotten word about what you did to get here.” he said smiling. “I also got a message from an anonymous source that says it was an accident, and Ms. Hart put you in detention anyways.” What a relief! “Oh! Yes! Yes! Yes!” I nodded. “You are free to go.” said the teacher. “You can wait outside. I will be calling your father to pick you up shortly.’’ “Thank You!” I said as I dashed out the door. I survived detention! I ran right into Karen. My smile faded. “Why are you here?” I asked. ‘’There’s a Saturday sewing class in the art room.’’ She said. “Look... I’m really sorry about getting you in detention. It was totally my fault. I tried to make it up to you by bailing you out. You shouldn’t have been there. I admit that I kind of worshipped the feeling of standing up to someone.” “I know.” I said. “Guess what? I got bailed out by an anonymous…..” I stopped. I smiled. I knew it was Karen. We linked arms and strolled down the long hallway to the front door. I saw my dad pull up to the front of the school. I got inside his car. “Goodbye, Karen!” I shouted. She beamed. All the fuss was over. I was glad that things had worked out with me and Karen. I guess that courage without conscience is a wild beast.
