Trying Will Always Pay Off

It was an exciting day. Today I, Veronica, is playing in the last game of the whole season. This game will determine who will be first place in the whole girls soccer club group 4! When I arrive my team is training. A little later the rest of the team arrives. We are all excited. (30 minutes later) We have a tie. I shoot... but I miss. The goalie punts the ball. Both teams race for the ball. One half of the crowd is yelling “GO Veronica!”. The other half is rooting for the other team. I race for the ball sprinting with all my might. I get the ball and sprint to the other side. I shoot with all my might. All in that moment the worst has come. I miss, the other team gets the ball, scores and 5 minutes later my ankle buckles. I fall in pain. The referee calls an injury. My coach carries me to the sidelines. I can’t walk since my knee hurts. I wait for 5 minutes. The pain is not hurting as much as before, but the coach tries to reason with me not to go play until my knee feels better, but I lie and say my knee doesn’t hurt any more. I run to the field with a limp that nobody notices. My dad yells as loud as he can once I get the ball. It is all so exciting. I run to the goal post and finally my hurting ankle gives out. I take a shot, collapse and make the goal… but we are now in second place. None of us let that bother us and we sadly, but still joyfully shook hands. After our team had such a big party that made us super tired.
The greatest test of courage on earth is to bear defeat without losing heart.
